The Audio-Technica AT440MLa, AT440MLb and At150MLX were highly rated cartridges that have been discontinued - victims of the consumer electronics product life cycle where the product life cycle is around 2-3 years which means a product has to be revised or updated every two years or so. On one side, this is beneficial to the industry and consumers since it forces constant research and innovation. On the other hand, it is wasteful and counterproductive. This fosters short-term quality and product thinking - products that have a short-term life on the shelf. They break or sound old after a few years!
